Match Report: Hendon RFC 10 - 18 Finsbury Park RFC

Finsbury Park under pressure from Hendon but retain their No 1 spot in the League

Hendon started up the slope and against the wind with the visitors soon realising their advantage to take an early lead out wide with a well worked try coming from a line out 0-5.

For the next 20 minutes Hendon forwards were in command with carries coming from Paul Julian, Nick Andrews and Donal O’Sullivan but all stopped short until Finsbury Park were penalised for offside and Hendon fullback Dan Watterson slotted over to take the scote to 3-5.
Hendon’s defence was second to none with every scoring opportunity being stopped short until into last play of the half Hendon conceded a penalty, which was converted slotted over by Finsbury Park for a lead of 3-8 at half time.

Into the second period with the match wide open, Hendon’s forwards dominated but all effort to cross the Finsbury Park line were stopped by a resilient defence with lost possession to the home outfit. After the match was suspended for 10 mins after a serious injury to Hendon’s Tom Mathius, it resumed with the Hendon pack in control; and from a set scrum 10 metres out scrum half Ross Williams saw the opportunity to beat two defenders to score an individual try with the wind carrying the conversion just wide to being the home side within three points at10-13.
With play now in Finsbury Park territory there was confidence for Hendon to score again as Ftheir opponents conceded a penalty but the conversion went wide. However Hendon continued in attack only to concede an easy ball to the visitors from a handling error for their No 11 to run the pitch and score an easy try out wide 10-18.

With only minutes left Hendon maintained the offensive but failed to get over the opposition line. Commented Coach Phil Smith “ Very proud of the Hendon Players for their great effort taking the league leaders to the wire but disappointed that the Club have come away with nothing to show.”

The League now has a 2 week break with Hendon back in action against Staines on the 17th November.
