Herts/Middlesex League 1

Saracens Amateurs RFC 19 pts Hendon RFC 15pts.

Penalties conceded cost stronger Hendon an away win but still claim a losing bonus point.

A first half of attrition by both sets of forwards gave the advantage to the Home outfit 9-0 through a penalty count in their favour. However Hendon had shown their dominance in the scrum pushing Saracens off their own ball several times and Donal O’Sullivan making ground through the Home defence.

Into the 2nd period Hendon changed tactics and within minutes scored with a run from the backline with Chris Kiyingi breaking the defence setting up a maul on the Saracens 22 then finished off by Mike Culhane scoring a Cian Hynes touchline conversion to close the score to 9-7. Hendon from the restart caught the Saracens defender, claimed the ball and mauled to the line with Larry Moore touching down but the try was disallowed for a double movement and Saracens kicked to safety. Hendon were now looking the stronger outfit and a defensive error by Saracens allowed Hynes to convert the penalty for a deserved lead 9-10. Against the run of play and with handling errors the visitors were defending again and from another penalty Saracens were ahead 12-10 midway through the period. Saracens scored again from a Line Out on the Hendon 10 metre line which appeared to be “not straight” then a run by their backline penetrated the Hendon defence for an awarded try even though the ball was dropped over the line. 19-10 on 30 mins. Hendon knew there was still victory in sight and another run by Kiyingi again set up the Hendon forwards to push to the line with outstanding prop Paul Julian scoring out wide 19-15.

The final whistle came with Hendon pushing Saracens into defence with another score on the cards but Saracens cleaned up and kicked the ball dead to end the game which could have gone either way.

This Saturday Hendon host Hitchin at Copthall for their next league encounter.
