Hendon’s coach Phil Smith was able to watch the 2nd XV as the Hendon 1st XV were without a game due to receiving a bye in the 1st round of the National Cup competition. Said Smith “ I was impressed with our second tier players who adopted many of the tactics from our Wednesday Club training sessions. It also gave me a better picture of players looking to make the first grade as the season progresses".
Hendon played down the slope from the kick off; and it was 15 minutes into the match from a line out to Hendon on the Stortford 22 that gave the Hendon backline an impressive run finished off by Aidan McCarthy out wide to score 5-0.
Halfway through the first period a scrum to Stortford on their 22 was won against the head by Hendon’s Larry Moore to set up a driving maul, finished off on the blindside by Moore to score another unconverted try 10-0
Stortford's heavier pack then dominated for the next 15 minutes inside the Hendon 22 with every opportunity to score stopped with excellent defence.
Into the second half Hendon faced the squally conditions but a run from defence by Helio Vicente to the opposition 10 metre line was stopped, scrum half JP Cremin fed to the Hendon backline with Chris Towndrow touching down, converted by Jack Ryan 17-0.
Mid way through it was McCarthy to score again from a backline move 22-0 with Towndrow finishing off for Hendon with a dummy break inside to score a Ryan converted try on 30 minutes for a final score of the match with Hendon winning by 29 points to 0 and gaining maximum merit points.
Next Saturday Hendon 2nds are again the only side in action at the moment away at Letchworth as the 1st XV again have a break from the League. It is hoped that a friendly fixture for the 1sts at home can be organised
