Hendon 2nds put in a sterling performance away to Letchworth to win through to the Club's second Cup Final on Saturday 27th April with the 1st XV already qualified for the Middlesex Federation Vase Final. Quoted Captain Aidan Power “the Club waits for years for an end of season final and just like a No13 Bus after a long wait two come along together!”
Playing into the wind and up the sloping pitch Hendon held out strong forward opposition for 20 minutes before winger Brian Murtagh scored in the corner to give them the lead at 0-5. Next on the scorecard was veteran JP Cremin after a brilliant midfield break to outpace his opposite number for another unconverted try 0-10.
From the restart on 30 minutes captain Power gathered to set up Cremin for his second try this time converted by Cahill to give Hendon a healthy lead 0-17. But then in the last play of the first half another attacking backline move by Hendon was intercepted for the home outfit to score 5-17.
Shortly into the second half, centre Michael Danso cut through the Letchworth defence to score out wide 5-22 but Letchworth came back immediately from a 5 metre line out to score a converted try 12-22.
Letchworth's attempts to get on the score board again were stopped by some excellent Hendon defence until a midfield break by Danso resulted his second try wide out which was converted by Cahill and gave Hendon the winning lead on 30 minutes 12-29. With the last move of the match Letchworth scored a consolation converted try 19-29.
Hendon 2s await to find out their opposition for the Final on 27th April at Cheshunt whilst Hendon’s 1st Team will be at home to London Scottish Lions (their amateur club) at the same time followed by the 65th Hendon 7s on Sunday 28th April.
