Hendon score their highest ever League win against a full strength Bank side for their 4th consecutive win of the season, with maximum League points.

Hendon were quick out of the blocks with their quickest try of the season (after 1 minute), with a long kick to touch by Cian Hynes which was won in the line-out by Rossa Dooley, sending scrum half Billy Burrell over in the corner. Man of the match (playing in the backrow) Chris Kyingi then scored his first of 4 tries, with Bank of England responding with a penalty try after a Hendon player was adjudged to have tackled too high. Despite being down to 14 men, Hendon responded with tries from Dooley, Kyingi and right winger Dan Watterson. With the bonus point already in the bag Hendon were back to 15, with further scores coming from left winger Will Theaker and Dooleys second with a superb 55 metre run through the Bank defence. But the bank were still in the match, and a breakaway by the Bank winger caught the attacking Hendon off guard for a halftime score of 14-45.

Into the 2nd period it was the turn of 2nd row Vytautas Pavilonis to power through the Bank forwards to score twice. Theaker was constantly looking for the opportunity and succeeded in adding his second try, whilst Kyingi crossed the whitewash for his second individual try. A rolling maul allowed Hendon 2nd Row TJ O’Sullivan to break away and score to give Hendon a score-line of 14-78. But a long penalty to the Hendon 5 metre line saw the home outfit score with a pushover 19-71, which was immediately responded to by the visitors as Kyingi secured his hat-trick. Against the run of play, a defensive error cost Hendon as the Bank No 8 ran in a bonus point 4th try to push the scoreboard to 24-83. Then with only minutes left to play Kiyingi ran in his 4th score with Theaker on the final whistle crossing for his hat-trick and a final marvellous score of 24-97.

Hendon coach Phil Smith was delighted with the team performance, commenting: “Last year we lost this away fixture and this result shows how far Hendon have come in a year, with the team showing real fluidity and excellent handling skills”. Team Captain Cian Hynes, who converted 10 of the 15 tries on the day, added: “All but 2 of the 18 players in today’s match were members of the Hendon squad last year, with newcomers JT Moncher and Nigel Toafa fitting in well. It is regular attendance at training sessions on a Wednesday, typically at Allianz Park, and a regular squad selection that is delivering the results we have achieved so far this season.

Hendon President David Gershlick was full of praise for all Club Players, commenting “ there is a terrific spirit of confidence with the Players, driven by Phil our Head Coach. We all trust he can lead us to success this season”.

As the League has only 11 Clubs, Hendon now have a 2-week break before they are back in action away to local rivals Mill Hill on Saturday 26th October.
