A convincing result for Hendon, played in cricketing weather on a very hard pitch, that took its toll on a number of players.

Hendon Coach Phil Smith was very pleased with the squad on their first league outing after a couple of warm up games and commented
“good to see our new players settling into the Hendon team and although our first competitive game showed promise, there are still further improvements to be made.”

In the match, Hendon were up the Hendon slope in the 1st period, with the forwards soon dominating giving the Barnet defence good practice.

However, a break through the Barnet defence by Hendon 10, Rob Casey, on 12 mins allowed new player Nigel Toafa to cross the line for his first try, converted by Hendon captain Cian Hynes (7-0). Barnet returned after 20 mins with a surprise try against the run of play, from a dubious quick Line-out throw to the Barnet No8, who ran unopposed to score under the post (7-7). Hendon returned to the Barnet 22, with Scrum ½ Billy Burrell pushing the ball wide for Chris Kiyingi to score out wide with Hynes converting (14-7). On the ½ hour, Hendon turned over a 5m scrum after losing a penalty line-out, with another new player, No 5 Junior Farao touching down with a Hynes conversion (21-7).

Into the 2nd period with the slope, Hendon took command; a long kick to the corner was chased down by Will Theaker stopping the defender and from the resulting scrum, the ball went down the line for new signing Jephte Moncher to score, Hynes converted (28-7). On 15 mins, a Hendon driving maul from the Barnet 22 saw winger Kiyingi join the push to score his 2nd try converted by Hynes (35-7). 3 minutes later, 2nd row Vytautas Pavilonis (Vytas) broke through the Barnet defence to score an outstanding individual try, after brushing aside 3 defenders for another Hynes conversion (42-7). On 25 mins, it was “who would score next” as Hendon dominated and another backline move from the Barnet 10m line saw Toafa score his 2nd out wide for Hynes to convert (49-7). As Hendon attacked again from the restart, a sloppy pass was intercepted by the Barnet winger to run the pitch and score unopposed (49-12). With the clock ticking down, it was the turn for back row TJ O’Sullivan to score out wide (54-12). As final play concluded, the last try came from Casey supporting Kiyingi with Hynes converting his 8th kick from 9 to conclude a positive start to the League season for the Home outfit.

This Saturday Hendon are away to Wasps.
