Hendon RFC 46 - 10 Saracens Amateurs

Hendon start the New Year with a devastating 8 try win and a hat-trick for Will Theaker.

Hendon were up the slope in the 1st period and the first opportunity came after 10 mins from a Cosy Mutuma carry to Scrum half Billy Burrell to touch down but the try was disallowed for a double movement. 5mins later, Paul Julian was the midfield carrier from the Saracens 10 metre line to the 22 with Fullback Dan Watterson supporting to score in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Mid way through the ½ Hendon were reduced to 14 due to an illegal tackle and could not penetrate the Saracens defence. In the last minutes of period Hendon defended their own line but conceded a penalty which Saracens converted to close the score-line to 5-3. The last move before the whistle saw Hendon’s returning Mike Culhane charge through the Saracens defence after winning a scrum against the head, but the final offload went astray.

Into the 2nd half and could the home outfit now with the slope turn their superior possession into points. The answer soon came from the restart as Donal O’Sullivan tackled the Saracens defender, the ball was kicked up-field, caught by winger Will Theaker on ½ way to run the pitch and score in the corner 10-3 and Hendon were under way. Again from the restart, Hendon TJ O’Sullivan claims the ball from a midfield ruck to run unchallenged to inside the Saracens 22 passing to fellow forward Julian to crash through the defence to score a Watterson converted try 17-3. With only 10 mins on the clock Theaker claimed his 2nd try ( and the 4 try bonus point) again beating several defenders to score a Watterson converted try 24-3. Hendon then conceded several penalties for Saracens stand off to kick upfield to the Hendon 5metre line and an all in maul gave them a converted try 24-10. Hendon came straight back on 17 mins with one of their best scores of the match ( and perhaps the season) after the Hendon forwards drove into Saracens territory, Burrell to Rob Casey to make the initial break then down the backline to Adam Johnson, stopped short for Burrell to start again a backline move with Mutuma adding the extra man at 12, passing almost on the line for Theaker to score in the corner and claim his hat-trick 29-10. Johnson managed to cross the whitewash with his next run from a Burrell pass after Hendon turned over a Saracens maul to go further ahead at 36-10 after Watterson converted. On the ½ hour it was when Hendon would score again after Saracens had put up a brave defence but Donal O’Sullivan found the opening to score after an interchange of passes between forwards and backline players 41-10. With minutes left to play Johnson scored a superb try down the right wing from the Hendon 10 line beating a tiring Saracens defence 46-10. Into the last play saw Hendon’s Luke Pollard make a break for a possible last score but a defensive knock on finished the match. 46-10

This Saturday Hendon travel away to face League leaders Hitchin.
