Match Report: Wasps FC 13 - 10 Hendon RFC
Herts/Middlesex League 1
Wasps FC 13 points Hendon RFC 10points.
Another disappointing result for Hendon, this time up against joint League leaders Wasps in a match that could have gone either way played out in atrocious conditions.
Hendon were put under immediate pressure by the well drilled Wasps forwards but Hendon’s defence held up to the heavier pack who took every opportunity to maul their way into the visitors territory resulting in a converted try on 15 minutes. Immediately following this setback Hendon were back to defending in what now seemed to be one way traffic as a penalty was conceded on the 22 allowing the home outfit to go ahead 10 points to nil.
Even with the wind and rain against them Hendon changed tactics to spread the ball wide rather than keeping the ball tight but backline moves fell apart with the slippery ball after great runs by Donal O’Sullivan, Chris Kyingi and Will Theaker.
Hendon reached the end of the first period without conceding any further points and now had the elements in their favour. From the restart Hendon’s Toby Ikwueke and Billy Burrell led the charge and in the 7th minute captain Cian Hynes slotted over a long penalty kick to put the visitors on the score-sheet at 10 points to 3.
From the ensuing restart the ball was collected on the Hendon 10 metre line by winger Theaker who ran through the Wasps defence with ease evading three tackles to score out wide with Hynes kicking on target to level the score at 10-10.
Hendon were now very much in the contest and continued to spread the ball wide with the home outfit keeping the ball within their forwards; penalty chances were missed by both teams but midway through the half Wasps converted one opportunity to go 13-10 ahead to see out the match.
The result meant that Hendon again collected a losing bonus point but slipped another position in the League with the hope the dice will fall in their direction with their next League game at Home on October 20th against Thamesians.
