Herts/Middlesex League 1

Hendon RFC 17 pts Hitchin RFC 31 pts

Hendon tactics were spoilt by gifting two scores to Hitchin and other controversial scores.

From the kick off Hendon had to outwit the larger and heavier Hitchin forwards by playing wide. Up the Hendon slope Donal O’Sullivan out-jumped a Hitchin lineout for scrum ½ Ross Williams to push the ball wide with Cian Hynes into the backline from fullback to set up a maul to push over with Chris Kiyingi scoring a Hynes conversion from the touchline 7-0. The visitors were soon back into attack and a strong defence stopped them short with Ben Gold excelling; however Hendon were let off when Hitchin having crossed the Hendon try line were then penalised for Hendon’s backline to run the pitch giving O’Sullivan the opportunity to score but was pushed into touch by the Hitchin defence. Hendon maintained their attack , Hitchin were penalised and Hynes converted for a 10-0 lead on 30 mins. Before the break Hitchin were awarded 2 easy penalties with Hendon down to 14 following a yellow card and claimed 6pts followed by a push over maul out wide to give them a try and the lead at 10-11 going into the interval.

Hendon now had the slope and all to play for in this now close contest with Hitchin looking for the victory to secure a top league position. The first score was Hitchin’s with a disputed penalty kick that was still awarded to the visitors 10-14. 15 mins into the period and Hynes pushed a long penalty kick down the pitch to the Hitchin 5metre line. From the lineout Hendon mauled over with winger Will Theaker scoring a Hynes converted try to give Hendon a well deserved 17-14 lead. Hendon then set up a further backline attack only for a final lob pass to be intercepted to allow Hitchin a uncontested gift try to retake the lead 17-19. The odds now appeared to favour the visitors as the home outfit were again outwitted as another Hendon attacking pass was intercepted allowing another gift try to Hitchin 17-26. With 10 mins left to play the visitors pack mauled to the Hendon line but great defensive work by Billy Burrell and Larry Moore stopped the attack to set up a ruck; then with the ball still held, a Hitchin player dived through from a considered offside position to touch down but a try was still awarded. 17-31.

With 5 mins left on the clock and with Hendon attacking the final whistle came to end this controversial league match.
