“A great start to the new season and a worthy result for all the hard work and enthusiasm realised in the July/August training sessions by all the Players” was the comment from Hendon Coach, Phil Smith. “ Every Wednesday” continued Phil “ has seen ever increasing numbers at the Hendon training pitch with Players from all levels at the Club being able to increase their skills, work on new moves and to run a match as a unified team. We are still looking for new players to fulfil vital roles and welcome all who want to be involved with a vibrant Club”
Deputy Captain Toby Ikwueke commented “ the boys are very enthusiastic and encouraged by this result but know that fitness has to be improved as the season progresses against some very strong Clubs that beat us last season”.
In the match Hendon played up the Hendon slope in the first period with scrum half Billy Burrell scoring the first try by diving over after a driving scrum to touch down with full back Dan Watterson adding the conversion for an 8 minute 7-0 lead.
Hendon’s forwards soon realised their ability to push Barnet off their own scrums resulting in the next score as the Barnet scrum half was caught and Hendon turned over the ball, which was gathered by Burrell to go blind to winger Will Theaker to score his debut try. This was also converted by Watterson making the score 14-0 after 15 minutes. Several mid-field runs by Barnet were stopped by the Hendon defence, especially No.7 Mike Culhane. Carries through the mid field by prop Paul Julian created platforms for Hendon to attack but Barnet’s defence held good until the 35th minute when their back-line was caught offside in their 22 for Watterson to convert a penalty to go ahead uphill 17-0.
However, in the last minute of the period Hendon were caught out as Barnet created an overlap to score in the corner for a turn round score of 17-5.
In the second half of play it was the visitors to take the first score after Hendon had held Barnet in their own 22 for the opening 10 minutes only to see a scoring opportunity erased as Barnet intercepted a long pass to run the pitch to score a converted try 17-12.
Hendon immediately took back control from the restart and from a ruck ,second row forward Nick Andrews picked up on the Barnet 22 metre line to run through the defence to score with Watterson converting successfully making the score a more comfortable 24 points to 12, Hendon’s training skills were then applied in winning possession from line outs, scrums and breakdowns; a run by TJ O’Sullivan from the Hendon 22 to the almost the Barnet line was stopped short but created the opportunity for the next score as
Donal O’Sullivan collected from the scrum to beat four defenders to score the fourth Hendon try for the bonus point and with Watterson converting to take the score to 31-12 Hendon were now in charge.
Into the closing 10 minutes Hendon’s back line found the spaces as next over the line was Adam Johnson from a well worked backs' move to score another Watterson converted try. With the score at 38 points to 12 going into the last minute an individual run by captain Toby Ikwueke carved through a tired Barnet defence passing to “Man of the Match” Culhane to score out wide to close a great start to the season for Hendon 43-12.

This Saturday 15th September Hendon host UCS OBs who won narrowly against Bank of England in their opening match. Kick Off at 3pm at Copthall.
