Hendon secure place in Vase Final
Hendon’s excellent recent form continued as they secured an impressive away win in the Semi-Final of the Middlesex Vase Competition.
Conditions for both teams on the day were bitter and very windy that meant kicking and line-outs were tricky at best and at times impossible.
Playing against the conditions in the first period, the visitors decided to move the ball at every opportunity and early pressure paid dividends with Captain Cian Hynes slicing through the defence for an early score.
Hendon forwards worked hard to provide quick ball and excellent service from scrum half Billy Burrell allowed stand-off Bob Casey to use clever footwork to finish off an excellent team performance.
In all Hendon’s fitness, organisation and willingness to pass the ball before contact was the difference between the sides. Further tries were scored by Luke Pollard, Donal O’Sullivan, Ben Gold and Hynes as Hendon rounded off an excellent first half with Hynes adding a penalty and 3 conversions at 0-34.
The second half saw Hendon utilise their bench and rest senior players but the scores continued to flow. Nick Andrews powered over after good link play between forwards and backs followed by O’Sullivan adding another score from a well worked back-row move.
Rob Page, Chris Kiyingi also got on the score sheet as Hendon continued to apply the pressure. Feltham, to their credit, continued to push Hendon and were rewarded with a late try but proceedings were finalised with the biggest cheer for evergreen centre John McCarthy who scored his first try in three years to end the match; Hynes converted three scores for Hendon to finish the at 5-65.
Head coach Phil Smith was delighted with the team's commitment and willingness to play expansive rugby in testing conditions. “The team deserve success this year for all their hard work and we will certainly be ready for the final against London Scottish on the 27th April.”
This Saturday Hendon return to League action with an away fixture against Actonians in Herts/Middlesex League One.
